60 Plus Years Working to Make the World a Better Place for Women and Girls
The Zonta Club of Northern Valley, NJ, a chapter of Zonta International (www.zonta.org) has been working for 61 years to advance the status of women. We do this through a global network of 30,000 plus members in over 60 countries. Our service is to local women’s organizations such as Shelter Our Sisters and the healing SPACE. Our international programs help women in Liberia, Rwanda, Central America, Samoa and many other places around the world. In some cases, maternal health is the primary consideration. In others, it is helping to reduce violence against women.
Zonta International is an accredited non-governmental organization with the United Nations where it works to advocate for all women’s issues. Through its representatives in New York, Geneva, Vienna and Paris, it advocates for women’s human rights in hopes that the world will be a better place for both women and girls. Our concerns for both women and girls include violence against women and girls, trafficking, female genital mutilation, sexual violence in conflict zones, lack of education, and, in the case of girls, early forced marriage, harassment in school, forced child labor and gender stereotypes.
The aim of all Zonta International chapters is to promote gender equality and the empowering of women as well as improving maternal health. We also advocate for education for all children, especially girls who are often kept away from school. We hope that every child will receive both a primary and secondary education.
At the United Nations, Zonta joins with other like-minded non-governmental organizations so that our voices will be heard. Only through a partnership of United Nations Member States and civil society groups will change occur. We invite you to join us. Visit our website at www.zontanvnj.org to learn more about us.
