January 11 is Amelia Earhart Day when Zontians celebrate the fact that Zonta International was the only non-flying organization that Amelia joined in her short, intense life. She had been a member of the Zonta Club of New York, USA, since 1930 when she disappeared on 2 July 1937 while attempting to be the first pilot to circle the world by air at the equator. The following year, Zonta International vowed to honor her memory with a scholarship for women graduate students in engineering. There were very few women pursuing advanced postgraduate degrees in that field, and the women of Zonta in 1938 wanted to encourage women to think big and participate in this exciting new field.

Zonta Service Project
Winter Coats for Women’s Rights Information Center

In mid-December the Zonta Club of Northern Valley, NJ, Inc. collected and donated 14 new and slightly used winter coats to the Women’s Rights Information Center.  As in years past, a couple of Zonta members brought the coats to Past & Present (a designer consignment boutique located in Closter, NJ) who, in turn, delivered them to the Women’s Rights Information Center—a community based non-profit located in Englewood, NJ,  that helps women learn and develop the skills needed to become self-sufficient in a changing society.  The winter coats become an important addition to their Career Closet, an ongoing service of Women’s Rights Information Center.

Pictured in the photo are Pamela DeBlasio, Owner/Stylist of Past & Present (on the right) and Barbara Stellabotte, a 29-year member of the Zonta Club of Northern Valley.  Zonta is a 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to empowering women locally and globally through service and advocacy.

Zonta Says No to Domestic Violence by their presence at the recent
Joan's Joy Child Safety Fest in Hillsdale

Zonta Says No to Domestic Violence by their presence at the recent
Joan's Joy Child Safety Fest in Hillsdale on Saturday, September 23rd
from 12 Noon to 5pm. Joan's Law, adopted in 1997, imposes a life sentence without parole on anyone convicted of murdering a child under the age of 14 in the commission of a sex crime.

The newest engraving on the White Butterfly Sculpture marks the date
lawmakers agreed to increase the age limit of victims protected under
the law from 14 to 18: July 21, 2017.

Mary Anne Clarke, Karen Nicodemus, Kim Scavo (left in photo) and Barbara Stellabotte (center in photo) proudly represented the Zonta Club of Northern Valley at this joyous and fun-filled day of celebration--an opportunity to educate and raise funds for The Joan Angela D'Alessandro Foundation, which helps youths and promotes child safety laws.
